PLACEMENT
It is important that the containers be placed on a flat level surface with attention to where the excess water will flow. Your container is supplied with rubber feet to elevate and allow the water to drain correctly. Two or three part containers should have their components secured together using a standard mason's waterproof mortar.
CLEANING
Our sandstone products are manufactured using a dry-cast stone material that ages and behaves much like cut sandstone. You will find that it will age or patina very gracefully. Due to its natural porosity, mosses, lichen and algae will find the material a great place to live and within a few years your sandstone products will look like they are quite old. If this is a look that you find desireable, applying a wash of yogurt, beer and moss to the outside of the surface of the stone and then keeping the stone wet can accelerate it.
If you would like to keep your sandstone products looking as new as possible, applying a clear stone waterproofing sealant to the exterior of the stone and periodically cleaning the stone with a bleach and water solution will prevent the growth of vegetation. The use of pressure washers to clean the stone must be done so with care. Very high pressure can damage the surface of the stone. Acid based stone cleaners should be tested in an inconspicuous place as they can dissolve the cement based material if used full strength.
CARE
Our standstone products are capable of withstanding freezes without damage. It is possible for water saturated root and soil balls to freeze, expanding and fracturing the container from the inside out. For this reason care should be taken in areas where the temperatures get very cold to prevent this from occurring. In many cases where the stone is subjected to wide extremes in temperature you may notice the development of small hairline cracks in the stone. These cracks are normal, and due to expansion and contraction of the walls of the container, are part of the naturally occurring aging process. Some of this weathering can be minimized by placing the containers in areas where they will not be in the direct sun (and heat up) or near sprinklers that may cool them off rapidly when hot. Also, care should be taken not to wet the stone down with cold water when the stone is hot as this may thermal shock them and cause cracking.
