Creating Walls of Color and Ceilings of Scent
for your Outside Rooms

Garden structures offer additional ways to add height, color and interest. With careful planning, and in just a few hours, it is possible to transform your garden with walls of color and ceilings of scent!

Maybe you think you have no space for such structures. But after seeing what Ann Kennedy designed for Agriframes' "Food For Thought" garden in the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in 1993, you may change your mind. This design won the Gold medal and fit into a space 47 feet by 27 feet utilizing 6 arches, 3 obelisks, a pergola and a bower!

Garden Arches, Trellises, Gazebos and Rose Pillars are just a few of the garden structures that will change the concept of your garden by creating fragrant "rooms" and will give you more sense of space and privacy than you could have ever imagined.

Your next question may be, How do I go about designing my space? When designing a space, there are many, many things to consider. We will not attempt to list them all at this time, but only a few to get you started.

Who will be using the space? Now, this may sound silly, but it is very important. You need to consider the ages of the people using the space, whether you need to accommodate for handicaps, pets and whether you want to incorpate anyone's hobbies (other than gardening, of course) into the space.
Spend time in the space you have available noting the sun or light available in both winter and summer. This will aid in plant selection.
Consider placement of plants and structures while standing at the bottom of the garden lining up the garden to suit the windows and doors. Next, go indoors and look out. Imagine where you would like to sit and what you would want to see. This is also a good time to plan how to screen views from neighbors. Moving a shrub or structure one foot to the right or left could make all the difference in your view.
